The Danger of Unbelief
At Arizona Campmeeting on Sunday, April 27, 2025, Bro David opened the service with reflections on a serious concern: unbelief. Highlighting scripture, he emphasized how the increasing prevalence of sin has caused many believers' love to grow cold. His message focused on a critical yet subtle aspect of spiritual warfare—how unbelief infiltrates and undermines the faith of even seasoned Christians.
Bro David pointed out a common misconception: unbelief primarily targets young people. While young individuals are vulnerable, scripture contains numerous warnings aimed at mature believers who should know better. The letters of Paul and John, full of cautionary advice, clearly demonstrate that adults, those expected to be deeply rooted in the faith, often face significant spiritual threats from unbelief.
The Deceptive Nature of Sin
Bro David drew attention to Hebrews 3:13, urging believers to encourage each other daily to avoid becoming hardened by the "deceitfulness of sin." He defined deceitfulness as something believable yet inherently false. Sin, he explained, often appears rational and harmless, causing people to believe false promises, ultimately leading to spiritual ruin.
He vividly illustrated this by recounting Eve’s encounter with the serpent in Genesis. Eve knew precisely what God had commanded, yet she succumbed to the serpent’s deceitful reasoning. The enemy skillfully twisted the truth, minimizing the consequences and exaggerating the benefits, leading her to question God’s honesty and benevolence.
The Enemy’s Sales Pitch
Bro David compared the serpent’s tactics to a persistent salesman. Just as salespeople avoid discussing the costs upfront, the enemy conceals the true consequences of sin. He creates urgency and a fear of missing out, manipulating emotions to cloud judgment and override obedience. Eve’s downfall was accelerated by emotional reasoning, her rationalization of the benefits overshadowing the known consequences.
This tactic remains potent today, where many believers are led astray by immediate gratification and the perceived wisdom of popular choices. The enemy’s promise of becoming "like gods" blinded Eve—and continues to blind people today—to the true costs of disobedience.
Counting the Costs
Bro David strongly urged listeners to "count the costs." Unlike the enemy, the scriptures transparently outline the consequences of sin: broken relationships, loss of integrity, and enduring hardships. He emphasized Galatians 6:7, reminding believers that they inevitably reap what they sow.
Highlighting the deceptive promises of false religions, Bro David noted they demand no spiritual costs, attracting followers through superficial benefits. In stark contrast, genuine faith demands sacrifice, righteousness, and obedience, clearly laying out both costs and rewards.
God’s Faithfulness and Credibility
Finally, Bro David contrasted the enemy’s unreliable promises with God's unfailing faithfulness, comparing it humorously yet effectively to a "credit score." God's impeccable "credit" is demonstrated by His unwavering fulfillment of promises throughout scripture and human history. God's conditions and benefits are transparent, consistently proven reliable and true.
He concluded with an encouraging message: though spiritual choices involve sacrifice, the rewards of trusting God are immense—restored relationships, peace, and a secure eternal future. Believers are called to diligently guard against unbelief, continually reinforcing their faith through scripture, prayer, and mutual encouragement.
